What it accepts and what you get

Limitations and notes

  • It checks the country length and the mathematical check (modulo 97). For countries not in the table only the mathematical check is done.
  • A valid IBAN does not prove the account exists or who owns it.
  • It is validated in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it say the check digits do not add up?

Almost always a digit was mistyped or swapped.

Does it work for other countries?

Yes, for those in the length table (many European and other countries). For the rest only the mathematical check is done.

When to use it

  • Before sending a transfer, to catch a typo.
  • When importing a list of accounts.
  • To format an IBAN with spaces.

Examples

ES91 2100 0418 4502 0005 1332
A Spanish example IBAN: valid with a correct national DC.
ES91 2100 0418 4502 0005 1333
One digit changed: the check digits do not add up.

Common mistakes

  • Treating an account as safe just because the IBAN is valid.
  • Copying the IBAN with an invisible character or a letter O instead of a zero.
  • Thinking a country outside the table is fully checked.
