How to use: Landed cost calculator
- Type the value of the goods in the shipment, the units it includes and the shipping and insurance costs.
- Enter the customs duty and import VAT that apply to you, and other costs such as the customs agent or the port.
- Tick whether the VAT is recoverable. Read the total landed cost of the shipment and the cost per unit.
What it accepts and what you get
- Input
- Value of the goods, units, shipping, insurance, duty (%), other costs, import VAT (%) and whether the VAT is recoverable.
- Output
- Customs value, duty, VAT, total shipment cost, cost per unit and the total cash out including VAT.
- Where your data is processed
- Your data is processed in your browser and is not sent to our servers.
Limitations and notes
- Duty is worked out on goods + shipping + insurance, and VAT on that value plus duty and the other costs.
- The percentages depend on the product's customs code, origin and destination: confirm them with your customs agent or customs authority.
- If the VAT is recoverable (a business that deducts it) it does not count as a cost; otherwise it is added to the cost per unit.
- It is an estimate. Use your own currency; everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is stored.
Frequently asked questions
What is landed cost?
It is the real cost of an imported product once it reaches your warehouse: goods, shipping, insurance, duties, taxes and other costs.
How do I know which duty to pay?
It depends on the customs code (TARIC in the EU) and the country of origin. Check with customs or an agent.
Why does cost per unit matter?
It is the base for setting your selling price and working out your real margin with the margin calculator.
When to use it
- Before ordering goods from a supplier in another country.
- To compare suppliers with different shipping and duties.
- To know the real cost per unit before setting a price.
Examples
- Typical shipment
- Goods 1,000, 100 units, shipping 150, insurance 50, duty 5% and other 80: total cost 1,340 and 13.40 per unit with recoverable VAT.
- Non-recoverable VAT
- Untick the box and VAT is added to the cost: 16.21 per unit.
- No duty
- Set the duty to 0 for products without customs duty.
Common mistakes
- Comparing suppliers by the price of the goods alone.
- Applying duty only to the value of the goods and not to shipping and insurance.
- Forgetting the customs agent and port costs.
