How to use: Backlink checker

  1. Type your site (for example yoursite.com) or the part you want to check (yoursite.com/blog).
  2. Paste the pages that should link to you, one per line (maximum 30), and press “Check links”.
  3. Read the result for each page: link is good, link with warnings (nofollow, sponsored, noindex…), link not seen or page error. Download the PDF report or the CSV if you need it.

What it accepts and what you get

Input
Your domain or address and up to 30 addresses of public pages (http or https).
Output
For each page: whether it links to your site, the link text, whether it is normal, nofollow, sponsored or ugc, where on the page it sits and whether the page can be indexed. Plus a CSV and a PDF report.
Where your data is processed
The addresses you enter are sent to the TodoToolsOnline server, which downloads each public page to look for the link; no addresses or results are stored.

Limitations and notes

  • Only the HTML the server sends is read. If the page adds the link with JavaScript, it will show as “link not seen”.
  • The page's code is checked, not how much the link is worth to Google. A good link does not guarantee any ranking.
  • Addresses are sent to the TodoToolsOnline server, which downloads each public page; no addresses or results are stored. Private and local addresses are refused.
  • Very large pages are read only up to a size limit; if the link may be further down, the tool says so.
  • A link that only sits in the menu, header or footer is flagged, because it is usually worth less than one inside the content.

Frequently asked questions

What do nofollow, sponsored and ugc mean?

They are marks the page's author puts on a link to say they do not vouch for it (nofollow), that it is advertising (sponsored) or that it comes from users (ugc). Google treats them as hints.

Why does it say “link not seen” when I can see it in my browser?

Probably the page loads it with JavaScript, or the link points to a different domain than the one you typed.

Can it show the backlinks of any website?

No: it checks specific pages that you list. To see all your links use the analyzer with the Search Console CSV.

When to use it

  • After publishing a guest post or earning a link, to confirm it is still there.
  • To re-check a list of earned links every so often.
  • To see whether a link is nofollow, sponsored or on a page that is not indexed.

Examples

A guest post
Your site: yoursite.com. Page: the URL of the article that mentions you.
Several pages
Paste a list of 20 URLs and download the CSV with each result.
One section only
Type yoursite.com/blog to count only links to your blog.

Common mistakes

  • Typing the page address in the field for your site, or the other way round.
  • Expecting the tool to see links that load with JavaScript.
  • Believing a good link guarantees a higher ranking.
